Who You Are Now

2020

Do you struggle with the fact that
you’re made of two bloods?
Sesuatu penindas dan sesuatu tertindas.
Siapa yang anda pilih?

Do you have to?
Even though you’re the product of
colonial invasion (di pihak ayahmu)
kepada darat ibunda; of their race,
language and religion.

But why pilih satu sahaja?
Nowadays, is it not common to see
Rojak folk like yourself?
So, kenapa awak berasa malu?
What do you have to hide?

Consider yourself lucky.
Awak tidak dibesarkan dengan kejahilan
kepada budaya lain.
You’re unlike the rest of us.
Unique.

Janganlah menjadi kacang yang melupakan kulit.

No. Coat your identity with multiple cultures.
Carve them into second chances.

A second chance to improve yourself.
Peluang kedua untuk meningkatkan diri.

A second chance to reflect on this life.
Peluang kedua untuk merenungkan kehidupan ini.

A second chance to speak up;
Peluang kedua untuk bersuara;

to make things right,
untuk memperbaikinya,

make things better.
memperbaiki keadaan kami.

Siapakah kamu pada masa ini?
Siapakah yang kamu mahu jadi?

Translation:

Do you struggle with the fact that
you’re made of two bloods?
One of the oppressors and one of the oppressed
Who would you choose?

Do you have to?
Even though you’re the product of
colonial invasion (on your father’s side)
Of your motherland; of their race,
language and religion.

But why choose only one?
Nowadays, is it not common to see
Rojak folk like yourself?
So, why do you feel embarrassed?
What do you have to hide?

Consider yourself lucky.
You weren’t raised to be ignorant
towards other cultures.
You’re unlike the rest of us.
Unique.

Don’t be the peanut that forgot its shell.

No. Coat your identity with multiple cultures.
Carve them into second chances.

A second chance to improve yourself.
A second chance to improve yourself.

A second chance to reflect on this life.
A second chance to reflect on this life.

A second chance to speak up;
A second chance to speak up;

to make things right,
to make things right,

make things better.
make things better.

Who are you now?
Who do you want to be?
